Adoption Procedures

We recommend the following reading prior to bringing a retired racing greyhound into your home:

Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood
Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan
Also, please read the article Trust, the deadly disease by Sharon Mathers.

Please complete an online application. After we receive your application, we will contact you to set up a "field check." A field check is a home visit by one of our representatives and helps us to ensure that our greyhounds go to the best homes possible.

Because we insist on doing thorough field checks, it is the policy of GPA FL/SE, to place our greyhounds somewhat locally. Exceptions have been made for special needs dogs and/or special circumstances.

After a positive field check, the prospective adopter makes an appointment to come to the kennel and meet the dogs!

On intake, all of our greyhounds are given an occult heartworm test and have a "tick titer" done. This test is for the tick bourne diseases Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, Rocky Mountain Fever, and Lyme. Tick bourne diseases do not always show symptoms and are easily treatable with antibiotics. Before going home with you, your greyhound will also have had spay/neuter, their teeth cleaned and polished, a thorough physical exam, and all vaccinations.

The first step is to fill out the adoption application.

There are two ways of completing the application form.

  1. Fill out the application online (.html)  and then submit the form to GPA FL/SE as an email message.

or

  1. You must have Microsoft Office Word to complete the (.doc)  applications.
